Phrazes for the Young Art

Just got through Julian Casablancas’s Phrazes for the Young, I’ve got to say that at least instantly it delivers. Each song has so much going on that while the 5 minutes tracks might meander throughout, Casablancas’s deep croon narrates us boisterously from start to finish. The balance of instruments and synths works incredibly well, as if the result of meticulous tweaking and revisions, which is probably why such a dense album can seem so smooth. On the flipside, the theme of being a music icon and the expectations/tribulations that come with that territory do get a bit tiresome, although at least our boy sings with conviction. Overall, Phrazes for the Young sounds like the fruits of hard labor, and one cannot help but feel reassured by the Casablancas/Strokes camp.

Frenetic Welsh seven-piece Los Campesinos! have announced the deats on their upcoming record, now titled Romance is Boring. I’m a huge fan of their previous releases, both Hold On Now Youngster and We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed are among my favorite CDs of the past few years. From their debut to their sophisticated if not superior non-followup, Los Campesinos! make getting the sonic wind knocked out of you feel refreshing. Here’s hoping we have another winner on our hands. So far the tracklist does not disappoint:

This isn't the great pumpkin, Charlie Brown...

When one thinks of Halloween classics, certain genre staples come to mind. Rather, THE genre staple comes to mind. John Carpenter’s Halloween is still as scary as it was in 1978, and it’s hard to believe that it’s been one of the only movies that has successfully channeled the funnest holiday (sorry National Donut Day). With the exception of the genre bending Nightmare Before Christmas, I actually can’t name another horror movie to feature the holiday as a prominent idea. (Does Sleepy Hollow count?) Well 30 years later – more or less, depending on which release date you consider – we have a challenger to the Halloween thrown, and it’s just as refreshing and relentless and Halloween still is, even after seeing it butchered time after time on basic cable. The movie is called Trick ‘r’ Treat, and it’s an orgasmic love letter to the holiday in a way that Elf is the pure-hearted pride of Christmas joy. The film is so immersed in the spirit of the season that I can’t see myself ever spending another Shocktober without it. I feel like it’s the kind of movie that’s best left knowing as little as possible before going into it. In a spoiler-free nutshell, Trick ‘r’ Treat chronicles the interwoven lives of a handful of citizens in their town where not everyone is who, or what, they seem. First-time writer-director Michael Dougherty (previously scripted Bryan Singer films X2 and Superman Returns) frames every scene with fog  and jack-o-lanterns, costumed children and bangin’ babes, and the result is a dreamy holiday horror fest that hits almost every laugh it aims for while upping the ante with nearly each sequence. I can’t tell you how many times my dropped in sheer “WTF” instinct.

Trick ‘r’ Treat has had a long trek to DVD, shelved by Warner Bro.’s since 2007 despite positive buzz and heavy internet coverage. At long last, the film has arrived, and not a Halloween too soon. Prison? No Problem

In a surprise move that also makes perfect PR sense, Lil Wayne has pleaded guilty to felony gun possession that took place in July 2007. A one year prison sentence is expected for Feb 2010, and Wayne must also surrender his passport. According to Wayne the subject gun was a “.40-caliber semi-automatic.”  This is great:

About 20 minutes after the hearing ended, Lil Wayne exited the building, covering his head with the hood of his coat. Photographers and reporters followed as court officials escorted him to his vehicle. In response to many reporters’ questions, all Wayne said was, “What’s up?”

That’s a direct quote from the MTV report.

Thankfully, we should see two more Weezy albums drop before year’s end to hold us over. In the end expect Lil Wayne to emerge more popular and (yeah) respected than ever. Sky’s the limit.

This past Tuesday Yeah Yeah Yeahs dropped an iTunes session that consists of exclusive retrospecting on the bands progression interspersed with studio cuts and acoustic renditions. From the email:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs sat down with iTunes recently and created an all-new program with music and interview material encompassing their whole career This new piece is out TODAY only on iTunes, and features exclusive acoustic recordings of “Hysteric”, “Runaway”, “Our Time”, “Dull Life” and “Maps”. Plus interview material and commentary from the band on songs from throughout their career.

I love love love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and while I consider this a must buy, I’m a little disappointed with the selection of acoustic tracks. First of all, “Maps” is an obvious choice for this compilation of sorts, however, I have so many versions/covers/remixes of that song, the last thing I need is another redo. We already got a “Hysteric” acoustic with It’s Blitz!, but both “Runaway” and – especially – “Dull Life” should be good. “Our Time” is a nice surprise, but I wish there was more reworkings than just reinserted album songs. I’m hesitant to spend $10 on an collection that features “Y Control”, “Gold Lion”, “Cheated Hearts”, “Down Boy”, and “Heads Will Roll”. Still, the interview pieces, featuring such titles as Conga Line Around a Dead Dog, are hard to pass up. In addition, It’s Blitz! is on sale on iTunes for the affordable price of $7.99 for the rest of the week.

Phoenix has got to be the most remixed band of the year, so it’s only fitting that Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is getting the Silent Alarm treatment with a compilation of assorted remixes. All star participants include Yacht, Passion Pit, Friendly Fires, and the one and only Animal Collective. You can stream this album here at CBS radio (huh?).

Have you heard about Flaming Lips next project? Frontman Wayne Coyne has declared that the band is going to cover The Dark Side of the Moon in full. Very interesting. Get a taste of that over at P4k. Their CD Embryonic came out on October 13th, and although I haven’t heard it yet, I really dug their gong crazy performance of “Watching the Planets” on Conan two weeks ago. Embryonic debuted on the Billlboard Top 200 Albums chart at number 8 this week, the highest number debut the band has seen yet, but don’t be fooled: Embryonic sold 32,000 copies to perch at #8, whereas 2006′s At War with the Mystics pushed 48,000 copies its first week, good at the time for the 12th slot.

In other Billboard news, Michael Buble easily held off the indie-heaven Twilight: New Moon OST featuring the likes of Thom York and Grizzly Bear. Buble sold a commanding 203,000 records of his Crazy Love in its second week. New Moon pushed 115,000 copies, although the album saw it release bumped up from Tuesday the 20th to Friday the 16th in an effort to curb the damage of the soundtracks leak, so it was only competing with half a deck. I never though I’d say this but I think there’s some worthwhile material on the New Moon OST, with both aforementioned acts delivering the goods as well as Death Cab among others. Can’t say the whole albums worth a purchase though.

Losing Feeling art

On October 6th No Age dropped their Losing Feeling EP to critical acclaim, and have subsequently been playing a bunch of shows around NY before heading to Europe (where they are now) for a few shows. The Losing Feeling EP is one you should check out. No Age’s loud rock stylings are well balanced on the 4 track set; each song creeps up on you, building a quick anticipation of what turn the song is going to take. “You’re a Target” is a prime example of their fine tuned chaos, and sounds like a ferocious culmination of the three tracks before it. I saw them at what is currently my favorite show of the year, the 8/2 No Deachunter show at the Brooklyn Bowl. I went into it expecting little from them, but No Age impressed as they held their own next to (literally, a foot or two away) Dan Deacon and Deerhunter, and the crowd loved them. Ninja Rap

The boys are back as Viacom has acquired the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise for its Nickelodeon and Paramount divisions. As per Variety, Viacom bought the rights to “one of the most successful franchises in entertainment” (really?) from the Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment for a whopping (not really) $60 million. The last TMNT film, the cgi TMNT, had a budget of $34 million according to BOM. Yeah I know 60 > 34, but in terms of Hollywood currency, isn’t that like, not that much? I mean, $60 million for global intellectual property rights for “one of the most successful franchises in entertainment” sounds like a steal. I should have taken out a loan from da bank and bought the franchise myself. Oh well. On the bright side, the Variety article elaborates that Nickelodeon will develop a new cgi (ugh) series scheduled for 2012, along with a new Ninja Turtles feature film from Paramount also for 2012. This works out perfectly because I’d love to see another TMNT film before the world ends. Cowabunga!

Just make the damn movie!

On the subject of handing out the rights to TV properties, IFC has been awarded (I specifically chose those words) syndication rights to Arrested Development, possibly the greatest TV comedy of all time. Not much in the way of details over at Variety, but IFC will air the show on Sunday and Tuesday nights starting at the end of the month. I guess this is cool news, cause you know, good for IFC, but I hope this doesn’t effect the scattered AD reruns on G4. I wish TBS picked up AD instead, isn’t that channel supposed to be Very Funny? Realistically, there probably aren’t enough episodes to earn it a spot in TBS’s daily sitcom orgy that runs from 12pm-12am Mon-Fri. Bygones. It would be nice if Fox used this money to help fund the often discussed AD movie, although we all know the money’s probably going to be used to develop some type of animal weight loss reality competition.

C'mon Twister

In a shocking turn of events, The Weather Channel will stop playing only weather forecasts and start showing movies! But don’t they already have weather based reality shows? So isn’t weather based movies the next logical step? Yeah, but apparently “the risk lies in alienating its regular weather-obsessed viewers, who tune in for news of high pressure systems rather than high drama.” Let’s take a look at the movies TWC’s lined up: The Perfect Storm (obvi), March of the Penguins (okay), Deep Blue Sea (!!!), and Misery (yeah?). The loose theme encompasses movies that are weather based or in which weather plays a pivotal role.  I bet those million weather obsessed viewers will loose their shit when their Friday night weekend forecast binges are disrupted for two hours by The Perfect Storm. Not. I actually think this is a pretty good idea, and a no-brainer if the goal is to expand viewership. Take a look at the movies. They’ve hit a bunch of different demographics with those films, so my only question is where’s Twister?

Lastly, if you’re looking for an excuse to return to Leno after watching the debut, Rainn Wilson will be on tonight, and he’s really funny.

Terminator Salvation’s McG (aka Joseph McGinty Nichol), for one, who directed Murray in Charlie’s Angels, recently claimed that Murray headbutted him on the Angels’ set during a creative dispute. “That’s bulls***! That’s complete crap!” says Murray, flushing slightly yet maintaining composure. “I don’t know why he made that story up. He has a very active imagination.” He pauses. The subject seems closed, but then a minor eruption. “No! He deserves to die,” he says, coldly staring, without breaking deadpan. “He should be pierced with a lance, not headbutted.”

That one’s a destined headline maker. Also:

He has no agent or publicist and is contactable only through friends or a freephone answering service. It took Sophia Coppola, for example, seven months to track him down for Lost in Translation.

What a guy. He also recently apologized for Garfield in a recent hit movie that’s biggest gag involved his cameo (movie will remain unnamed, I’d never want to ruin that surprise).
